Minti.com is a social network for parents which concentrates on advice and resources for parents. Users can contribute advice or read the advice contributed by other parents. The site has a number of social networking features, including groups, friends, photos, messaging, forums, an activity stream and watchlists. The site has a large number of articles contributed by parents and parenting experts, and any member may also contribute an article. The user's home page shows featured advice, featured links, latest advice, latest question and answers, the current tag cloud of topics being discussed, and recent gifts and compliments.
The site uses a point system for participation, and users may give points to others as a gift for contributing useful advice, or issue a compliment to them. Users can also earn money for participating on the site through a revenue sharing feature which allows a portion of the revenue from site advertising to be shared by users. Minti.com was founded in March 2006 by Clay Cook and Matthew Macfarlane. Clay Cook is currently CEO, while Matthew Macfarlane is CFO.
Competition to Minti.com comes from sites such as Babycenter.com. Babycenter.com was founded in 1997, and has reached over 100 million parents since launch. Babycenter.com, as its name implies, does concentrate on early childhood developments, while Minti.com concentrates on a wider age range of children. Both sites offer similar features, but Babycenter is a much larger site. Minti.com, however, currently has over 8,000 parenting advice articles posted online.
The Minti.com site has an uncluttered look and feel. The site is very responsive, and page loads happen quickly. All of the social networking features work well, and navigation is intuitive, There is a convenient top menu bar shown on all pages of the site. Advertising is displayed at the top of most pages on the site, but it is relatively unobtrusive.
Registration to Minti.com is free and is required to use the social networking aspects of the site. The registration process asks for username, password, email address and country. Validation of the email address is required. Upon registration, users are prompted to fill out a survey and profile information, but these steps are optional.
There is no premium membership offered to the Minti.com site, and free registered users have full access to all features of the site.
A large amount of useful advice for parents is available on the site in the form of articles, and answers to a lot of questions can be received quickly in the forums.
